The Boston Red Sox lost their most consistent player earlier this season when third baseman Alex Bregman went down with a quad strain.

Red Sox fans and fantasy baseball managers are currently wondering when Bregman will return to Boston's lineup. Below, we'll provide a Bregman injury update and look at Red Sox betting odds.

🚑 When will Alex Bregman return and be back with Red Sox?

Bregman hasn't played since May 23. Bregman turned at first base against the Baltimore Orioles that night after singling to left field and came up limping. The two-time MLB All-Star strained his right quad on the play, the same type of injury that caused him to miss 69 days of action in 2021.

Bregman has been out 17 days so far with this current injury. But he's progressing well, and current indications are he won't miss as much time as the veteran did four years ago.

“Just going through a progression compared to when he got hurt before with Houston. He feels a lot better,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora told MassLive.com on June 6.

“He’s locked in," Cora added. "He has his date (for a return) in his mind. We just have to keep working. Obviously, we don’t want to rush, and we have to be very diligent with it. But he’s feeling great.”

Cora was also asked if he thought Bregman’s rehab was going better than expected, and the skipper replied, “Yeah, I think so.”

Bregman began a running program on June 5. It seems reasonable the Red Sox would aim to bring their third baseman back into the fold right after the MLB All-Star break.

Boston starts the second half of the season on Friday, July 18 in Chicago against the Cubs. If Bregman were to return for that game, it would be 56 days from when he strained his quad.

Here's a look at the Boston's schedule around that time.

  • Friday, July 18: Boston Red Sox at Chicago Cubs
  • Saturday, July 19: Boston Red Sox at Chicago Cubs
  • Sunday, July 20: Boston Red Sox at Chicago Cubs
  • Monday, July 21: Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies
  • Tuesday, July 22: Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies
  • Wednesday, July 23: Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies
  • Friday, July 25: Los Angeles Dodgers at Boston Red Sox

⏳ How long will Alex Bregman be out for?

Texas Rangers center fielder Evan Carter is the model for a quick recovery from a quad strain. Carter was injured on May 16 before returning on June 3, missing just 19 days. Of course, not all quad injuries are the same, and Father Time is on Carter's side, as he's just 22 years old. Bregman is 31 years old.

The infielder’s quad strain looks to have been of the moderate variety, while Carter’s was likely just a mild one. Recovery from a mild strain usually takes one-to-two weeks, while bouncing back from a moderate issue typically requires one month, and recovery from a severe strain usually means being out two-to-three months.

💰 Red Sox betting

The Red Sox have been enduring a disappointing season thus far, as they're well behind the rival New York Yankees in the American League East. Boston was getting +2500 odds to win the World Series just prior to the start of the 2025 MLB season. Only nine teams were getting better odds.

Now the World Series odds show that Boston is +5000 to win it all. Be sure to check out more baseball odds at our best MLB betting sites.
